Blackhouse Grill on the Square, Leeds

To continue my recent spate of restaurant reviews, last week I enjoyed a wonderful meal at Blackhouse: The Grill on the Square in Leeds. It was a wonderful evening, so I've got plenty of photos to share with you:

We were warmly greeted and led to our table, where we chose some drinks and were also brought some nibbles of bread and olives whilst we decided on our dishes. The service was excellent all night, and each table was obviously experiencing the same level of attention throughout the restaurant. The bread and olives were a thoughtful touch. The warmed ciabatta was delicious and although I don't even like olives, I devoured the plump and juicy ones we were given - that's how good they were!

Drinks wise, I started the evening with a Bisongrass Cooler, comprising of vodka, apple liquor, passion fruit, apple and lime, as my brother opted for a London Pale Ale. My cocktail was fresh, fruity and a perfect light accompaniment to our food.

Now on to the starters - we chose the crispy calimari and the duck spring roll. Our waitress helpfully informed us that the calimari were served with the tentacles included, which we could choose not to have if we wished. As regular visitors to Greece, we were very happy to hear about the tentacles but it was very thoughtful to check with us before serving. The calimari were excellent - light and perfectly seasoned, as well as not at all chewy or greasy. The duck spring roll was also fantastic - the pastry was a real stand out, thin and crispy without a hint of sogginess. The two dips accompanying the dishes were well balanced and contributed to the sleek and elegant presentation.

Then it was time for the mains. As a huge steak lover, my brother chose the sirloin, cooked medium rare. I couldn't resist the appeal of the Wagyu burger as a more affordable way to taste this fantastic meat (if you don't know, Wagyu are the famous Japanese breed of cattle which are massaged and fed beer or sake to improve their taste). I decided to top it with smoked bacon and cheddar and both dishes were accompanied with home-cut chips. My brother also chose some crushed carrot and swede to accompany his steak, which was really tasty.

My burger was simply fantastic - the meat was as good as promised, providing the best burger meat I've ever tasted. The accompaniments within the bun were tried and tested favourites, allowing the meat to take centre stage. The chunky tomato relish accompanied the chips well and the entire dish was cooked to perfection. As for the steak? My brother proclaimed that it was the best he'd ever had, and from a steak-devouring rugby player, that's quite some recommendation!

We chose two more drinks - I chose the Bramley Apple Martini, which was tart and refreshing, and my brother opted for one of the special ales called the Thornbridge Kipling. It was impressive to see such a wide variety of beers and ales available on the menu. Personally as a wine and cocktail drinker, I always have plenty of choice when eating out, but beer drinkers can often be forgotten in such a setting. It was refreshing to see my brother offered a variety of choice, including some interesting ales he had never tried before.

For dessert, my brother chose the chocolate fudge cake which was pure gooey indulgence, just what you want from a chocolate dessert. I picked the Affogato because you really can't go wrong with ice-cream, coffee and Amaretto! It was a perfect end to a perfect meal. Finally I must mention the atmosphere, which was wonderful. The layout of the restaurant was clearly well thought out and I loved the huge fish tank which divided the restaurant and kitchen. We were also treated to some excellent live jazz, an excellent pianist and singer, who added to the welcoming yet luxurious atmosphere. I often find that live music, although lovely, can be far too loud in restaurants but in this case the volume was perfectly balanced to still allow conversation, yet provide an elegant background to our meal.

I couldn't recommend Blackhouse highly enough for a fantastic evening, full of wonderful food, a huge variety of drinks and an excellent atmosphere. I'm hoping to return there soon as it is perfect for a celebratory meal or simply an indulgent evening. Please let me know if you visit!

Gusto Restaurant and Bar; Cookridge

Hello! There's been plenty going on in my life since I last posted - I have now handed in my dissertation and therefore completed my degree, so I am finished with university and looking forward to a long summer of blogging! I certainly kicked it off in style, as I've got some amazing restaurant reviews to share with you over the next few weeks - starting with Gusto Restaurant and Bar in Cookridge.

Sammie and I were invited to sample some of Gusto's new dishes, as part of their menu revamp which occurs twice a year. There were some lovely summery additions to the menu and I opted for the baked fillet of seabass, served with roasted pepperonata and drizzled with lemon puree. I also added a side dish of grilled asparagus with truffle butter. Both dishes were light, fresh and full of flavour. The asparagus was seasoned perfectly and the fish was perfectly cooked and delicately flaky under my knife. The pepperonata was vibrant and tasty and the lemon puree added a burst of sharpness to the dish.

I also asked to be recommended some wine to accompany my dinner, as 'white wine with fish' is the extent of my knowledge - the lowest price versus highest alcohol percentage is normally how I make my alcohol decisions! I was recommended a Sicilian white wine, which I had never tried before and it paired beautifully with fish. I liked that Gusto prioritised Italian wines to complement their Italian menu as this added to the strength of the restaurant's identity.

For dessert, I finished off the meal with an interesting dessert intriguingly named The Gusto Bellini - a peach and Prosecco jelly with a Prosecco foam. The description didn't include the fact that this dessert also included vanilla ice cream and a side of biscotti. The peach jelly was fantastic and was filled with both fresh peach and raspberry pieces. The side addition of biscotti was slightly odd, as the strong cinnamon somewhat overwhelmed the jelly, but was tasty nonetheless. Ever since the latest series of Masterchef, I have become obsessed with foams and airs so I really enjoyed the Prosecco foam as a light and frothy topping to the delicate dessert.

We were also treated to some delicious cocktails. I started with an Elderflower and Thyme martini, including gin and elderflower liquor mixed with apple juice, thyme and lemon. It was the perfect balance of sweetness and gin - I love the recent trend for fresh herbs in cocktails to add something different to a traditional cocktail. The second photo shows the Passion Fruit Margarita - I'm currently loving passion fruit themed cocktails and I really enjoyed the inclusion of the fresh fruit too. Finally, I tried the Sangria Rose, including rose wine, elderflower liquor, Cointreau and grenadine served long with lemonade and fresh fruit. With its fresh fruit and easy to drink fizziness, it finished off the summery meal perfectly!

Gusto Restaurant and Bar is a classy, well-presented and thought out restaurant and bar offering delicious food and a great variety of cocktails. It would be perfect for a special meal with family and friends, or a posh first date (if only!) It's certainly worth the walk down from Headingley for the cocktails alone, so if you're in the area, it's definitely worth checking out.

The restaurant also offers various themed evenings which are worth keeping an eye out for on their Facebook page. For example, on the 10th July, Gusto Cookridge are hosting a Great Gatsby Ball, including a three course meal and glamorous themed evening. It looks like a fun-filled, enchanting and self-indulgent evening based around a fantastic theme - will you be there?

Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet lipstick: Peach Club

There's been an awful lot of hype surrounding the new Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet lipsticks, and today I'm adding my two cents worth into the mix. I was persuaded to try these out by Katie on our Bloggers' Holiday and I'm so glad I did! Since then, I've popped back and bought some more shades, but today I'm just reviewing shade 04: Peach Club:

These lipsticks have been an absolute revelation to me. I love lipstick, and can't go out of the door without wearing it, but within the hour you normally can't tell that I bothered. These have some simply fantastic staying power. Cup of tea? It stays put. Lunch? It's still standing. In fact, after an entire night out, snacks and even ice-cream, this stuff stays on my lips. Despite this, a sweep of micellar water on a cotton pad removes it without too much hassle, so it really is the best of both worlds.

I love the colour, which is buildable from a neutral peachy colour up to a bright neon orange. It's perfect for summer and I simply can't get enough of it. I also like the lipgloss style application, which allows me to be more accurate and the product glides on really easily. I'm a definite convert!

Boots and Superdrug are both offering 3 for 2 across their range, including these lipsticks, so it's the perfect time to try out the range. Are you a Rough Edition Velvet fan?

OOTD: Dotty for Spotty

Hello! I think it's time for a summery outfit post, don't you? A few weeks back, I posted about the incredible Cath Kidston Factory Store in St Neots. I mentioned that I had picked up a Cath Kidston dress for just £25 and this is it:

Dress: Cath Kidston Factory Outlet. Jumper: Topshop. Belt: Primark. Necklace: New Look. Sandals: Topshop

This dress really does encompass so many of my favourite elements - it's red, fitted at the waist, hits just below my knee and has pockets! Dresses with pockets really are the best, aren't they? At first, it felt a slighty like a nightie, so I added a belt and a statement necklace to dress it up a little bit. Thanks to this dress, I'm now obsessed with Cath Kidston clothes - I love their fun prints, vintage styling and the quality is excellent. The best thing is that they are now so much more affordable too, thanks to the Factory Outlet

It wasn't quite warm enough to go out without another layer, so I added a jumper on top in yet another spot print. I really like the double print effect, which keeps the two pieces co-ordinated, and the difference in colour adds a nice contrast. I finally threw on my old favourite  'geek' sandals from Topshop, which matched with my belt and finished off the summery look.

What do you think of my Spring look? I've certainly been converted to Cath Kidston clothes, and can't wait to head back to the St Neots' Factory Outlet for some more bargains!

Express Lunch; Pizza Express

Last week, I was kindly invited to test out Pizza Express' newly launched Express Lunch Menu. This menu is trialing in selected restaurants across the UK, and luckily York is one of them:

The aim of the new Express Lunch is to deliver light, quick and affordable dishes. I decided to order the Italian Meat Piadona, a filled dough of cured meats, mozzarella, roasted tomatoes, pesto and rocket. Albeit slightly cold, it was a tasty pitta-style sandwich packed full of tasty Italian ingredients. It was the perfect portion size, leaving me pleasantly full but not stuffed.

My friend chose the Pollo Salad, a salad of chicken, goat's cheese, mixed leaves, peppers, olives, croutons and tomatoes accompanied with warm dough sticks. She assured me that it was also lovely and we decided to accompany our mains with two sides - dough balls and polenta chips. I'm sure most people will have tried Pizza Express' famous dough balls, so there isn't much to add, but we enjoyed the polenta chips. They were light and fluffy, with a crispy coating and I thought they were tasted delicious.

Overall, the menu is fantastic value for money - my Piadona was just £4.95 and the Pollo Salad was £5.25. I thought the portion sizes were excellent for a filling lunch, which still didn't ruin my appetite for dinner! However, the service was a little slow - it took an hour for our lunch and we didn't have starters or desserts. We personally didn't mind, as we were having a lovely catch-up, but I wouldn't describe it as 'express.' Nonetheless, I was generally impressed with Pizza Express' new Express Lunch Menu for a light and filling lunch, at an excellent price.

Have you tried the Express Lunch Menu yet?

Bloggers' Holiday: DIY Eton Mess

My latest posts have all been about our Bloggers' Holiday (you can read all about the location and food here) and now it's time for my third and final post. On our last evening, we ended the holiday with some true indulgence - our very own Eton Mess creations served out of some fantastic cocktail glasses. I was going to include this in my Bloggers' Holiday food post before deciding it deserved a post all of its own, including the instructions to make them yourself:

We were kindly sent these cocktail glasses by drinkstuff and as well as using them for their obvious use throughout the weekend, we also decided to fill them with sweet treats for a tasty dessert! I'm currently obsessed with exciting cocktail glasses, so I loved these Z-Stem Martini glasses - they're the perfect size and the shaped stem makes them easy to hold. I also managed to grab one of the Mason Drinking Jars, which are huge and simply the most exciting way to serve cocktails!

I was inspired to make this DIY Eton Mess from some Ringtons ginger biscuits we were kindly sent as part of a selection. We also received some proper traditional tea, strong enough for 2 cups per teabag, which the biscuits paired with fantastically. Sometimes, the tried and tested traditional brands are the best, and Ringtons delivered high quality tea and biscuits, with no messing about.

Back to the pudding! To start my Eton Mess, I crumbled some of the ginger biscuits into the martini glass. I then added a couple of scoops of clotted cream ice cream.

For the following layer I added some defrosted raspberries, which added some much needed fruit as well as some liquid to the pudding. I crumbled on some more ginger biscuits and then some of Kel's marvellous white chocolate flapjack (which I need the recipe for!)

Finally I added plenty of whipped cream and topped with miniature marshmallows. For such a mismatch of ingredients, it certainly tasted delicious and looks very pretty in its cocktail glass. It just shows that sometimes, when you're craving something sweet, raiding your cupboards can result in a surprisingly tasty dessert! Have you unexpectedly thrown together a dessert that just worked? I'd love to hear what it was!
