Should We Just Put Down The Camera?

It's a bit of a wordy one today folks, but it's a topic that has been bothering me, so I hope you are happy to grab a cuppa and listen to my thoughts. As a blogger, I am a little bit addicted to taking photographs. You name it, I do it; photograph my clothing, my surroundings, my holiday and the ultimate stereotype, my food. However, during my recent trip to Paris, I was frankly shocked by the sheer number of photographs being taken, often at the expense of actually looking.

put-down-the-camera

Particularly on holiday, we all want to record what we've done. I know I am pretty bad at spamming Facebook and Instagram with my travel snaps, as well as overusing the hashtag #travelbloggers and I'm not the only one. However, I was appalled when I watched a fellow tourist in the Louvre attempt to lie across a lion statue then grab its tail purely for some entertaining photos. This statue was thousands of years old, but now tourists were grabbing and pawing at it all for a profile picture. In the Sacre-Coeur, people were ignoring the clear 'no photos' signs in order to pose next to a statue or place of prayer with their thumbs up. Tourists surrounded the Venus de Milo and the Mona Lisa, as they pushed and shoved for a photograph, before moving on without a second's glance at the information surrounding it; it needed recording simply because it was famous and something to tick off the list.

I couldn't understand it; why the need to prove you were there? But in my own way, I am entirely guilty. The fact I laughed at the people pretending to touch the top of the Eiffel Tower in their photographs, but kind of wanted to do it myself, sums up the dilemma. The culture of FOMO relies on both the fear of missing out and the need to prove that we aren’t missing out. Social media, in particular Instagram, ensure that we are constantly assailed with perfect images and locations but when was the last time you read a caption which actually told you a fact or a story? At the moment, I’m loving Superlatively Rude’s Instagram for this very reason; she combines totally swoon-worthy images of Rome with comments, stories, thoughts and tales from her travels. That’s what it should be about; sharing those images to provoke a conversation or share a moment rather than tick another landmark off the list and move on.

It happens in the UK too. One of my genuine worries if I go for an impulsive meal is "what if the meal is really good and I won't have any photos to blog about it?" It's completely ridiculous but I'm sure fellow food bloggers will agree that it is a very real struggle! The need to record my life in photographs is a blurred line as a blogger because so many of the opportunities I get and the posts I write are dependent on these images. I suppose my argument is that there is a time and a place. I'm not criticising blogging or acting the tourist at all, I am as bad as anyone and love doing both, but when I watched a tourist walk into a statue and fall over because he was so intent on his 3DS audioguide in the Louvre rather than looking at the object itself, I had to stop and think.

I'm determined to make some changes; to start, I'm switched off my mobile at night and I'm sleeping much better for it. I'm going for dinner and leaving my camera at home, or wearing a great outfit without the need to photograph it. I'm resisting that ridiculous pose outside a famous landmark or maybe I'm thinking sod it, and doing it anyway - but with a pinch of salt and thinking about what my impact might be. This article about a crossfitter posing on the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Euriope in Berlin sums up the problems with prioritising a cool Instagram over paying attention to your surroundings. I'm trying to ensure that I look and understand first and then perhaps record what I've learnt in the form of an image.

Will you see less selfies and photos of my food? Probably not. But I'm going to try to put down the camera a little more often and just enjoy that moment; whether it’s an excellent meal or a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Do you have any thoughts?

Let's Glow

I've talked about my love of Leeds enough times now but I always love travelling there for events. I'm starting to wonder how long I can claim to be part-Yorkshire though as I haven't lived there for over a year! However, when the lovely India invited me up for a fun secret event, I couldn't wait to book my trains. The event? Glow in the dark bingo!

The event was held at Belgrave Music Hall, one of my favourite drinking spots thanks to its super cool roof terrace and the fact that it's the home of Dough Boys Pizza. If you haven't been, I would seriously recommend checking it out for a fun night out. For #LetsGlow, we were given a couple of rooms entirely to ourselves and the rooms were transformed to a UV paradise. We could get our face painted with UV paint or our nails done. I couldn't resist going all out and getting my face painted, and the result was better than any festival attempt I've tried before; it definitely makes such a difference when a pro is involved!

We were also treated to some gorgeous pizza from Dough Boys and delicious fries smothered in cheese and bacon from Patty Smith's. The alcohol was flowing and by the time I sat down to the first game, with my gin and tonic in hand, I was excited to play some bingo. Did you know that gin and tonic glows under UV light? Just another reason why a G&T is the best...

I haven't ever played bingo before and I think the bingo player was slightly shocked by quite how slow we all were! Once I'd realised that the columns ran left to right from single figures to the 80s in the final column, it made finding the numbers a lot easier (thanks for not telling me this in your bid to win Corinne!) After a couple of games, we all started to get the hang of it and although I was too slow to call out on my full house thanks to a certain Speedy Beady, I did manage to bag some Soap and Glory goodies in another game.

This was genuinely one of the most fun events I've attended for a while; it just shows what a great time you can have doing something a little bit different surrounded by some lovely sociable bloggers. Thank you to Ladbrokes and India - you are all stars!

How to Bag A Bargain Break

This year I've traveled more than ever before and all for bargain prices. I don't mean to brag, but I've bagged four days in New York for £550, including flights and hotel, and a trip to Croatia for another four days for under £100 for both flights and an apartment. Next week, I'm heading for a £150 five day break to Rome and the week after to Cologne for three days. The cost for that break? Just £53 in total, with flights costing £9.99 each way. As a result, I'm frequently asked how I get such bargain breaks abroad, so I wanted to share some tips with you today:

Tips-for-a-bargain-holiday

1. Ryanair is your friend
I know everyone recommends SkyScanner for searching flights, but I personally find that it doesn't actually show you the best bargains. Ryanair is the best place to go, although I always also check EasyJet as they fly to slightly different locations. I frequently browse Ryanair's website for deals and this is how I bagged some £9.99 flights to Cologne. Use 'Fare Finder' if you aren't fussy on location to browse the best deals across the world. Don't forget to change your departure airport to see if there are any cheaper flights - I find that Leeds or Manchester can sometimes be cheaper than London, even with a train factored in.

2. Avoid package deals
Sometimes a package deal is best, but I personally find this rare. Therefore I always book the flights and hotel separately. I love Hotels.com for cheap accommodation, including hostels, apartments and hotels. If you sign up to the newsletter, they send you lots of secret deals and tempting discounts; it's really useful but also very dangerous! Best of all, they have a great loyalty program where after ten nights, you get one night's stay absolutely free. It may seem like a lot, but these quickly stack up and a free night is a free night!

3. Don't forget transport
When budgeting, always remember to factor in how you will get to the flight. It's all very well finding a £20 flight but not if getting to the airport will cost you a £50 taxi as it's in the middle of the night. During all my breaks, I've made the most of public transport in the city and if you can follow the tube in London, you can probably get the hang of any other city's transport system. I like to buy a travel pass, for example a ten-trip ticket in Paris cost me around 14 Euros. It's better value and means that I don't need to worry about finding somewhere to buy a ticket for every single trip.

4. Check for local deals
Did you know that on the first Sunday of the month many European cities offer free entry to their famous landmarks? You can get into the Musee d'Orsay or the Louvre for free in Paris and the Colosseum in Rome, just because of the date. If you are a student or in your early twenties like me, it's also worth checking out the deals for young adults. The Louvre is free for under 25s from Europe if you show your passport and even the Plitvice Lakes in Croatia offered a student discount.

How do you bag a bargain holiday - do you have any of your own tips? Which cheap city breaks would you recommend?

My Dream Luxury Holiday

I've been enjoying writing lots of travel posts recently, so today I wanted to get dreaming and share some dream luxury travel ideas. I'm always looking for a bargain deal when I travel, and I don't think I'll ever be able to shake the student mentality of spending as little as possible on my holidays, but sometimes it's nice to imagine where I could go if money wasn't a factor:

luxury-travel-wishlist

All Things White
White sands, white linen and white accessories seem to be the theme of those travel Instagrams I'm forever swooning over. I always choose my hotel based on its low price but after my recent trip to Paris when the hotel was frankly horrible, I'm now thinking that I might need to start prioritising comfort over cost! A crisp, white apartment, with a huge king sized beds and a pile of pillows to fall into, would be my dream place to stay for a luxury break.

Yacht Life
For me, there seems to be nothing quite as luxurious as a yacht. A place to stay that is not only all yours but that can go anywhere you want it to? It sounds amazing and if I won the lottery, I would head straight to Croatia to do some island hopping luxury style in a massive yacht. I love the idea of being able to travel to any uninhabited island I wanted to and explore at my luxurious leisure.

Beds on the Beach
These bed sun loungers seem to have become the place to pose for fashion bloggers on their hols recently, and I must admit that it makes me want to do the same. The comfort of a bed, combined with a huge swimming pool, a cocktail in hand and some sunshine sounds like the perfect recipe for luxurious relaxation. I love the four poster bed style and the gorgeous white curtains in the image above from Thalasso Spa in Fuertaventura

To Infinity and Beyond
I'm a big swimmer, so a luxury private swimming pool is definitely in my dream holiday wishlist. I love the idea of an infinity pool with a view, either of the mountains or the sea, before a trip to the spa for a massage and some pampering.

Get dreaming with me! If you were to create your own luxury holiday, what would you include?

Cornish Treats

My travel posts have been full of breaks abroad recently - and there are plenty more to come. However, when Parkdean got in contact to offer me a luxury Cornwall themed hamper, my thoughts turned to the UK as a holiday destination:

holidays-in-Cornwall

luxury-Cornish-hamper

Parkdean-Cornwall

I had to try both the Devon and Cornish ways of eating scones ... *for science*

Sometimes I honestly find that a city break in Europe is actually cheaper than a weekend away in the UK. For example, I have a three day break to Cologne next month which cost just £53 for flights and hotel; you'd definitely struggle to get anywhere for that price in the UK. However, this doesn't mean I don't love exploring my home country and I'm looking forward to spending a weekend in Birmingham to celebrate the end of my Masters degree next month.

The hamper was absolutely wonderful; filled with scones, clotted cream, strawberry jam, tea and biscuits. The scones were really tasty and I am a complete sucker for some unhealthy but delicious clotted cream! I hadn't tried Cornish Fairings before and I loved the spiced taste with a cup of tea. The strawberry jam was really tasty, full of large chunks of sweet strawberry, and of course the presentation was gorgeous. Hampers are a bit of an addiction of mine and I think they look so cute; I love the idea of reusing this for a romantic picnic.

I would absolutely love to go to Cornwall and was on the verge of booking a trip with a boyfriend a few years ago. However the 5 hour drive completely put me off and shortly after we broke up, making me glad I hadn't made the trip with him! I've always wanted to try surfing and Cornwall is known to be a great location for it. I'd love to walk along the coastal paths and I would also love to try 'coasteering;' navigating the coast by climbing, jumping, swimming and diving. After all that exercise, I would head to one of Cornwall's adorable tea rooms to scoff some scones (jam first, then cream the Cornish way of course), eat clotted cream fudge and drink plenty of tea. A visit to the Eden Project is a must, as well as Land's End and the fascinating Lost Gardens of Heligan.

Parkdean are offering a great competition to win a holiday worth up to £499 in either Cornwall or Devon by entering this fun quiz. It turns out I'm pretty terrible at knowing the differences between Cornwall and Devon - how do you fare?

Do you have any UK holiday memories or posts about Cornwall to share?

OOTD: Workwear Style

You may have noticed on Twitter that I recently completed two weeks work experience at Bloomsbury as I am looking to begin my career in publishing. I don't often talk about my studies or career plans on my blog (although if you'd be interested, please let me know!) but today I wanted to give you a peek into my internship wardrobe. Fashion bloggers don't seem to share their workwear style very often, so I wanted to share my office look:

what-to-wear-to-work

affordable-student-work-wear

what-to-wear-internship

simple-chic-workwear

primark-shoes

harry-potter-bloomsbury-earrings

Dress: Primark. Sleeveless waistcoat: New Look. Necklaces: Primark. Shoes: Primark. Earrings: Platform 9/4, King's Cross

I commuted into London for two weeks, which took at least an hour and a half each way, so I needed my wardrobe to be comfortable and versatile. My go-to was therefore loose shift dresses like this navy blue tshirt dress from Primark. I intentionally bought this a few sizes too big in a size 14 to ensure that it was properly oversized and a more appropriate length for the office. I love the simple style, with short sleeves and zip pocket details - although unfortunately the pockets aren't real!

To smarten up the look, I added a sleeveless waistcoat. I must admit than I was unconvinced on this slightly odd trend but once I tried one on I realised how versatile they could be. Publishing as an arts industry isn't smart in the suits and heels sense, but I still like to look formal, especially during an internship when impressions count. I think this waistcoat adds a degree of smartness without looking overdressed, which was exactly what I was looking for. I love the grey colour and checked print to layer over plain dresses like this one, which adds some detail and warmth to the look.

I wore trainers for my walk from King's Cross to the Bloomsbury office but I always took a pair of ballet flats to change into once I was there. I love these pale blue pumps which I picked up from Primark, of course. The bright blue colour adds a pop of colour and I loved the shiny buckle detail. I matched this with gold necklaces and of course, I had to wear my Dobby earrings to work with Bloomsbury, the publishers of Harry Potter!

Do you have any workwear style tips or posts to share? What do you think of my outfit?

Nokia Lumia 735 Review

I hate my current phone. My trusty Moto G finally died a few months ago and since then, I've been making the best of a Huawei Ascend Y550. It's fine and does the job, but I've ran out of storage space so I irritatingly can't download any more apps, even with a memory card. I've been getting fed up of making do so when Microsoft got in touch about me trialing a Nokia Lumia phone, I jumped at the chance:

I was sent the Nokia Lumia 735, as Lumia Voices thought it would be a great fit for me thanks to its 'Selfie Cam' and they judged me well! If you follow me on Instagram, you will know that I love a good selfie and I've been posting more than ever thanks to the Selfie Cam. The front camera is an impressive 5MP and the Lumia Selfie app automatically smooths everything, making your photos totally Instagram-worthy without any extra filters. I get seriously annoyed at the quality of my current phone's front camera so the Nokia Lumia 735 was a dream. I could flip my camera, snap a quick image and I was done - simple!

The normal camera was also great and I made a lot of use of it; the photos above from my Instagram were taken with a mix of front and main camera. I particularly liked the self-timer and exposure settings; it meant that I could attach the phone to my selfie stick and set a timer to then take up to five photos on different exposures, which meant I was sure to get the right shot. Unfortunately, what really let the phone down in the whole was the lack of apps. The only version of Instagram was a BETA version, with far less filters and no ability to edit brightness, highlights or contrast. This was such a shame as for some photos which needed an extra boost, I ended up Bluetooth-ing the photos to my current phone in order to post them to Instagram., which slightly defeated the point!

My favourite app was definitely the pedometer. Thanks to my trips to London and Paris, I managed to rack up a decent number of steps and I quickly became addicted to tracking how far I'd walked each day. It's a great motivator to get off the sofa and an easy, free alternative to a FitBit, which I've been thinking of buying for a while but they are just so expensive! The records of how far you've walked and calories burnt were brilliant, and you can also personalise this by inputting your height and weight for more accurate readings.

Overall, I was impressed with the Nokia 735; the bright green style is striking and modern, the selfie camera is a blogger's dream and there are some great inbuilt apps like the pedometer. However the lack of social media apps really let me down and I'm not sure I could transfer to a Nokia without my beloved Instagram! It must be said that for me Nokia phones still bring up images of the clunky bricks everyone owned at school and they have certainly come a long way since then - I'm pretty impressed!

Have you tried any Nokia phones?

Say It With Flowers

Who says romance is dead, but I've never been sent a bunch of flowers by an admirer. I also rarely buy them for myself but a beautiful bunch really brightens up a room, so when Debenhams Flowers got in touch to offer me a bouquet from their flower delivery Summer range, I had to say yes.

summer-flowers

debenhams-flowers

debenhams-flowers

flowers-by-post

I originally ordered a bunch of sunflowers and green hydrangeas but when the bouquet arrived, the green hydrangeas were starting to brown at the edges and the sunflowers weren't fully open. I was a rather disappointed so I got in touch with Debenhams to describe the situation. I was so impressed with their response; I immediately got an email back apologising for the flowers and explaining that if this happened to any customer, their policy is to send another bunch alongside either a bottle of wine or some chocolates to apologise.

I appreciate that fresh flowers, which are then transported across the country, can be tricky things so I was more than happy to accept Debenhams offer for a new bunch and a bottle of white wine. Next day delivery is available until 9pm on weekdays so the delivery was speedy and hassle free.

The bouquet of roses and pastel pink stocks I subsequently chose were just what I had been expecting the first time round. The peach coloured roses are gorgeous and the long pink stocks create a summery and fresh arrangement of flowers. I was really impressed with both the quality of the flowers by post and the excellent customer service. Sometimes all you need is a bunch of flowers to brighten up your day and this bunch looks lovely in my sitting room.

Even better, Debenhams Flowers have given me an exclusive discount code to share with you. For 25% off your own bouquet of flowers, you just need to use the code DFBLOG25 (this excludes the flowers by post range). That's the next birthday or anniversary sorted!

5 Wishlist Travel Destinations

I may have six holidays planned abroad this year, three completed and three to go, but I am already planning my next holiday to book. I find travelling difficult to do if you don't have a friend with the same interests, time and money as you and I'm simply not brave enough to go it alone, as much as I would love to. I have so many places I want to visit but I wanted to put together five of my current top wishlist destinations, especially as I head to Paris tomorrow!

1. Peru
I'm fascinated by historical lankmarks like the Pyramids and the Colosseum, but the various Inca ruins are one of the places I most want to see. I would love to trek along the Inca trail in Peru and Machu Picchu is a must see for me. Food is a huge part of travelling for me, so I'd love to try the local Peruvian cuisine - although I'm not sure I fancy the local delicacy of guinea pig!

2. Belize
I have a friend who is currently island hopping in Belize and I cannot describe how jealous I am! The country sounds so interesting; cheap but tasty food, beautiful beaches and a once in a lifetime experience. Scuba diving, swimming with sharks and snorkelling with stingrays at the Hol Chan marine reserve are all on my list of things to do there!

3. New Zealand
It seems to be the new place where everyone goes to travel, but I would love to go to New Zealand. From the amazing All Blacks rugby team to the filming location of Lord of the Rings, it has got so much to do. You can swim with dolphins, watch for whales and you can either ski or surf, depending on what takes your fancy. I'd love to visit Milford Sound, the Tongariro Crossing and the geothermal spas.

4. Sardinia
With its white beaches, fantastic food and glorious sunshine, Sardinia seems like the perfect Summer holiday destination. Personally, I love the idea of travelling to the mainland first then catching the ferry across to Sardinia. The location is stunning, the Italian food is sure to be delicious and the coastal walks show off those views. I've never visited Italy but I've got a trip to Rome in September coming up and I'm so excited to stuff myself with gorgeous Italian food!

5. Iceland
I'm currently keeping my eye on deals for Iceland as I would love to visit here this year. There are great tours available to see the Golden Circle, the stunning Blue Lagoon and of course try to catch the Northern Lights. It's another great spot for whale watching and I want to fulfil my New Year's Resolution to go husky sledding - and what better location for it?

There are so many more places I want to visit - Prague, Los Angeles, Egypt, Belgium, Japan and Vietnam to name just a few. Where would you like to visit? Have you visited any of these places - I'd love to read some blog posts!

Review: Homeslice Pizza

London is always brimming with so much to do and as a food lover, whenever I head there I always try to tick off somewhere new to eat in The City. A few weeks ago, I joined Hayley for the Aldi and Tesco Christmas press days and also had the chance to catch up with Erica, Shaun and Mike; it's always nice when the people you know from the internet are also lovely in real life! I was more than happy to rely on the locals' choice for dinner and so we headed to Homeslice in Covent Garden. I enjoyed it so much that when I headed back to London with my Mum this week, I wanted to introduce her to the wonders of giant pizza...

Homeslice-pizza
Homeslice-pizza-menu

Best-pizza-london

pizza-london

A gigantic 20" pizza at Homeslice is just £20 and there are some amazing unique options to choose from. If you can't decide, you can even choose a half and half option. My Mum and I opted for half goat shoulder, savoy cabbage and sumac yoghurt and half anchovy, olive and onion. Both were completely delicious; the base was super thin, crispy and perfectly seasoned and the toppings were such good quality. For me, the star of the show was the goat shoulder; strong, meaty and falling to tender pieces. I would have never have thought to put cabbage or yoghurt on pizza but it worked really well, creating a Moroccan array of flavours. The anchovy half reminded me of Greece; the salty anchovies paired brilliantly with the olives and the small amount of cheese meant the pizza wasn't overwhelming. The entire thing was huge but we gave it a pretty good go and I was left feeling completely stuffed but very happy!

Another fun thing about Homeslice is the drinks. When we enquired about wine, we were told that we would be served a bottle from which we could drink as much as we liked and we would be charged for how much we drank. Intrigued, we chose the white wine and did not expect the size of bottle which arrived! It was probably about 2 litres worth and certainly very dangerous if you were in a large group. As we didn't know the price, we only had one glass each, which worked out as £4 per person, and we were very proud of our restraint! Personally, I don't think that's a bad price for wine in a restaurant as the drinks are normally the part of the meal which is more expensive. When we wanted to pay, the waitress brought out a ruler and physically measured how much we had drank to calculate our bill. It was so bizarre and certainly a great quirky way to enjoy some wine!

Homeslice is a must for a friendly, sociable meal with friends or family. I love the casual, relaxed feel and the way of serving wine is simply brilliant. Although there are moments when I would quite like a knife and fork, being able to dig in and demolish the giant pizza with your hands is part of its charm and sometimes you just want to get messy with your meal.

Have you tried Homeslice? Where else do I need to add to my 'to-eat' list in London?

OOTD: City Break Style with Matalan

I adore Summer and all the opportunities it brings; seeing friends, travelling, getting out and about in the sunshine and putting together a great Summer wardrobe. I seem to keep booking short trips away in Europe and my latest is a trip to Paris in just two weeks time! It was a complete bargain and I love spending two or three days away in a European city whenever I can. With the help of Matalan's Holiday Shop, I put together a city-break Summer holiday outfit perfect for a hand-luggage only flight:

city-break-outfit

paris-style

matalan-summer-shop

matalan-roll-top

matalan-shorts

matalan-summer-shoes

Top: Matalan. Shorts: Matalan. Shoes: Matalan. Bag: Matalan. Necklaces: Primark

First things first, I needed a bag. The World's Lightest Range is perfect for short breaks away so I picked up this holdall (in purple of course). It's massive yet fits the flight hand luggage restrictions for EasyJet and cost just £18. It also has a 10 year warranty which is amazing as I have a bad habit of overloading handbags until the strap breaks! Now I can pack it full of everything I need, including some handy zipped laundry bags I didn't photograph but picked up for just £2 from Matalan, without worrying about the bag falling apart halfway round Paris.

When travelling and walking lots, I always look for a comfortable pair of shorts. These shorts are absolutely perfect; I adore the tile pattern, the gorgeous colours and of course the elastic waistband so I can eat plenty of croissants! I actually cannot believe they cost just £8 for something so comfortable and stylish. I teamed them with this pastel roll-neck swing blouse for £10. As I've joined the job hunt and started attending interviews, I've realised how few work-appropriate tops I own as most of my wardrobe seems to be Harry Potter tshirts - not that I have a problem with this particular obsession. I picked this pastel high-neck top as something which is both interview-appropriate but also easy to wear casually on a city break too. I would advice sizing down as the swing style is absolutely huge, but this does mean that the top is nice and breathable and perfect for hiding that French food stomach!

Finally I added these grey t-bar sandals for £12. I always look for sandals with a closed toe as they are more versatile to wear all year round with tights as well as bare legs. This grey shade matches with most of my wardrobe and the trainer style base means they are sure to be comfortable wandering around Paris. I wasn't expecting the toes to be pointed but this style is really fashionable this Summer and I think it makes them look more expensive than a pair from Matalan! When this entire outfit cost less than £50 including the huge holdall, I'm seriously impressed with this bargain outfit. The great thing is that all of the different pieces of clothing are so easy to wear in different ways so they work not only as an entire outfit, but fit into my wardrobe too.

Combining comfort, style and affordability is always my aim during Summer and I think this look is perfect for this. Paris is notoriously the city of style and I'm looking forward to introducing it to some budget fashion! What do you think of the look?

*All items from Matalan holiday shop provided in return for my honest review*
