A Weekend in Birmingham with Travelodge

As I mentioned in my recent weekend travel post on Southampton and London, I love any excuse to get away for the weekend, whether it is in the UK or abroad. I have only visited Birmingham once, many years ago, so when I was offered the chance to head there for a weekend to Travelodge with my parents, I couldn't wait to explore. We spent two nights and two days in Birmingham, so I wanted to put together a mini guide on what I'd recommend for a city break weekend - it's a pretty big post full of information, so grab a cuppa and have a read:

Where To Stay
I was invited to stay in Birmingham by Travelodge, but as a family, we always stay in a Travelodge anyway. I stayed in a Travelodge in Southampton and my parents always used to stay in one of the York Travelodges whilst visiting me at university. For me, Travelodge is the perfect budget-friendly option; you know exactly what to expect - a clean, practical room with good facilities and a convenient location. My parents and I were booked into a 'family room;' a king sized bed and two pull-out beds. The pull-out beds were really impressive - my parents actually chose to sleep on these beds, leaving me with the king sized bed (which I wasn't complaining about at all!) The room was really spacious and clean and the shower was hot and powerful, which for me is always a deal-breaker. Our room was impressively quiet and we definitely appreciated the small TV on the wall, which meant we could catch up with the rugby! I always recommend Travelodge when booking a UK break away, especially as they can easily be forgotten as they don't show up on sites like Hotels.com. The Birmingham Central Newhall St Travelodge was one of the more modern offerings and the location was an easy 20 minute walk to the city centre; close enough for ease of exploring but far enough away for some peace and quiet.

What To Eat and Drink
On the Friday evening, we arrived fairly late in the evening at our Travelodge and settled into our room. We wanted to eat somewhere close to our room so we chose the Handmade Burger Co, a short walk from the Central Newhall St Travelodge along the canals. The walk was such a lovely experience and so peaceful, contrary to my expectation of a city as big as Birmingham. Handmade Burger Co unfortunately hasn't made its way to Cambridge yet so although it was a chain, we didn’t feel like we were eating somewhere we could go to at home and it was a great start to the weekend.

The following day, I was determined to try some local Birmingham restaurants. For lunch, I would definitely recommend Purecraft Bar and Kitchen. Their Scotch Eggs are known as being some of the best in Birmingham and they didn’t disappoint; the picture alone makes me hungry. Purecraft had an impressive array of beers and ciders, as well as their tasty tapas-style pub dishes. I was really impressed with both the presentation and quality of the food we chose, and we had a very enjoyable lunch.

Birmingham is famous for its Balti curry so we knew we wanted to spend the Saturday evening in one of their curry houses. I'd research the Balti Triangle using this great local guide, so we jumped in a taxi to Ladypool Road, the main street in the area. I'd read some great reviews online about Al Frash so we decided to give it a try. The reviews were right; the curry was brilliant. We had a selection of starters, including some tasty chicken pakoora and I opted for the simple chicken Balti as my main. It was fantastic; served in a red hot pot and bursting full of heat and flavour. My only negative was the location as it was far less touristy than we were expecting and we felt a little bit lost – and if you want to drink alcohol, don’t forget to bring your own as most curry houses are unlicensed.

Of course, I managed to find some time for gin and I was excited to discover The Jeykll and Hyde bar, complete with a Victorian Gin Palace. This was one of my favourite bars I have visited in a long time, from the formal portraits of dogs in uniform, to the sign about gin and happiness. There was an extensive and fascinating cocktail menu, including sharers served in a gentleman’s bowler hat and cocktails in teacups. The sweet-flavoured cocktails were my favourite, and were extremely popular with everyone else in the bar too. You could choose from lemon bon bons, strawberry laces, chocolate éclair, pear drops and parma violets, all served in cute jam jars. I would definitely recommend taking the short walk from the centre of town for a few drinks in this curious and creative bar.

What To Do
Birmingham is well-known for its shopping, so a trip to the Bull Ring Shopping Centre was a must. I even braved Primark on a Saturday afternoon and bagged an amazing faux fur coat to add to my growing furry wardrobe. If you enjoy shopping, Birmingham is a great place to go for the weekend to treat yourself to some retail therapy.

Personally, I like to explore as well as shop when I head away for a city break. Whenever I head away for the weekend, I like to check for local festivals and events and we were lucky to discover the Emergency Poet at the Arts All Over The Place festival. My Mum had heard about the Emergency Poet on the radio earlier in the week, so when we found out that she was to be in Birmingham the same weekend as us, it felt like fate. We headed to The Bond Co to visit her and it was a really unique experience; I sat in an ambulance and answered the Emergency Poet’s questions, before she ‘prescribed’ me a poem to read. I really love the idea of taking the time to sit and simply read a poem in moments of self-reflection and enjoyed the fascinating, if wacky, experience. Birmingham seems like a great city for the arts, so if you are visiting, it’s a good idea to check out The Bond Co or The Custard Factory to see what’s on.

We also tried to visit the Back to Backs Museum but didn’t realise that it was vital to book a slot for this National Trust museum – if you are heading to Birmingham, I’d recommend booking a space on this tour to learn more about the history of Birmingham. However, we had already planned to spend our Sunday at the Black Country Living Museum, so we still got our history fix. The Black Country Living Museum is a huge site, full of historical houses, a school and shops. For me, the most interesting aspect was the opportunity to walk through part of a mine. My great-grandfather was a miner and it is a part of our family history which is very important to us, so it was both fascinating and emotional to glimpse a small insight into his experience. I really enjoyed exploring the Living Museum because I love the interactivity of these kinds of museums. I ate the best fish and chips I have ever had at the on-site fish and chip shop – I would recommend a visit on my lunch alone!

Have you ever spent a weekend in Birmingham? Is there anywhere you would recommend?

Fitness Friday: Witness the Fitness

Happy Fitness Friday! Today I wanted to use a campaign from Microsoft to inspire today’s post, which incidentally is all about inspiration. Microsoft wanted to know what’s inspired or inspiring about my fitness regime, and I could even win a fitness bundle worth £1000 – as well as talk about a topic close to my heart.

my-fitness-inspiration

For me, the question wasn’t what inspires me, but who, and without a doubt that person is my brother. Exploring fantastic countries, record-breaking athletes and my own personal accomplishments are all great, but I think the best inspiration is something close to home and ‘real.’ My one image which sums this up is actually two images combined – my brother and I working out together. As you can see, his press ups are far more advanced than mine but I love that he pushes me to work harder than I do on my own. He gives me the structure, knowledge and motivation I need to reach my goals both in and out the gym – as well as inspiring a love of weights.

It’s pretty useful having a brother who is a personal trainer and in his final year of his Sports Science degree. Thanks to my brother, I know that eating healthy doesn’t mean eating little and I’ve been introduced to the wonders of chicken from MuscleFoods and kale. I know that strong is better for me than skinny and to structure my workouts around performance based targets rather than beat myself up over the number on the scales – measuring your body fat is much more accurate anyway. I know that if I’m sad, angry or upset, a workout in the gym will always help because as Sam likes to tell me, “there’s no such thing as a bad workout” once you’ve got yourself there.

It’s also the best way to bond with one another. The gym is a huge part of Sam’s life and when he is home from university, it’s the best way to catch up with each other. For me, our workouts are as important socially as physically, because I get chance to catch up on what he’s been up as well as telling him about my life. Now Sam is back at university, I’ve been struggling with my motivation and it’s made me realise how much I rely on him to get me out of bed and down to the gym. He proves to me that any excuses of “my genes” “my diet” or “my job” are simply untrue – if he can do it, why can’t I?

I promised to share Sam’s Instagram as a thanks for letting me be embarrassing and talk about my little brother on my blog. If you’re into fitness, check out his account for lots more snaps and you can also get a 10% discount off Physiq Apparel using the code SAMN10.

If you want to share your fitness inspiration, check out the details of the competition here or please leave a comment below – I’d love to know what inspires you!

Give It Some Welly with Joules

I don't normally share competitions on my blog, but when Joules contacted me to explain their latest competition to design their new welly, I knew I needed to share it with you all:

The competition itself is really simple: you simply pick the colour of the main boot, the trim and sole and then design your pattern. You can either choose from existing prints, including the iconic hare, stag or dog prints found on current Joules pieces, or you can draw your own design which is then added to the welly design. I'm a bit of a sucker for 'design you own' websites - I love customising Nikes with Nike ID to get as many fun and different options I can - so I think this is a really fun competition. In case you were wondering, the print on the boot on the right is supposed to be lemons, inspired by my love for gin and tonic - drawing is harder than it looks!

If you are more creative than me, the prizes are fantastic. The best welly designer will win a luxury break worth a massive £5,000, including 3 nights in a golden oak treehouse cabin plus lots more surprises. A stay in a treehouse is one of my holiday dreams, so I would love to win this! The winning welly will also go on sale on the Joules website, with all proceeds from the sales being donated to charity via Charitably Joules.

10 runners up will also each receive a £250 Joules gift card so there are plenty of chances to win, but it's also an easy and fun competition to enter. I've already played around with a few designs to give you some inspiration and I think even a scribble looks pretty cool!

You can enter the competition here and the closing date is the 4th December, so get creating!

23 years; 23 things

It's my birthday! I am, as you might have guessed by the title, 23 years old and of course, I had to write a blog post about it. Blogging is a huge part of my life so I knew I wanted to post something here on my birthday. However, as I was thinking about what to write, most of my ideas were rather self-reflective and, frankly, a little bit sorry for myself so I wanted to come up with 23 positive things which I want to continue doing or work to achieve now that I am 23.

1. Travel to Iceland; my number one dream destination at the moment is the Blue Lagoon and getting to see the Northern Lights

2. Hit the gym and lose at least a stone. Sounds dramatic, but really I just need to find some much-needed motivation and feel better about my body.

3. Hit 500 followers on Bloglovin - I feel that this is a reasonable figure to aim for over the next year, so fingers crossed!

4. Hit 2000 followers on Twitter - again I think this is a fairly low estimate so hopefully this is achievable!

5. Move to Leeds. This is the Big One. I'm on the job hunt for marketing and PR jobs in Leeds and my dream is to be there by Christmas. This is one thing I am determined will have happened by the time I'm 24 - however, now I've said that, I bet something upsets this plan!

6. Find the perfect pair of over the knee boots and be confident enough to rock them in public. Not all things have to be 'important' - I've got my eye on this pair from Public Desire.

7. Try dating again. Probably not yet, but at some point I'd like to put myself out there again and see what happens.

8. Wear falsh eyelashes. I'm 23 and have never tried them - at the very least it would be entertaining.

9. Travel out of Europe. I'd love to visit South America or New Zealand, although these might be destinations that will have to wait a few years. If I'm going to go, I want to do it properly!

10. Make new friends. I am quite happy with a small friendship group, but this often makes me lazy when it comes to putting myself out there and making new friends.

11. Attend more blogger meets. Like I mentioned above, I find it hard to be confident with new people and I'm determined to not stick to only bloggers I know at blogger events. I've already signed up for the Leeds Xmas Meet in December and I'm excited to chat to some new people!

12. Set a fitness challenge and complete it. This year it was the Race for Life. Next year, who knows? Do you have any suggestions?

13. Settle on a punchy sentence to describe my 'style.' How is this so hard to do?

14. Go back to the Warner Bros Studio Tour, because I'm obsessed!

15. Walk my dog more. I always enjoy it when I get off the sofa and actually get outdoors - luckily I'm spending next week on a cottage holiday in Yorkshire with my family so there will be plenty of time for dog walking!

16. Eat and review all those local restaurants on my list. I keep finding myself saying "I hear that it's really good there" - I want to go and try it all for myself!

17. Carry on not biting my nails. This was one of my New Year's Resolutions (for about the fifth time) but they are currently looking long and freshly painted. I want this to continue!

18. Go to a live gig. I was supposed to see Walk Off The Earth earlier this month but I didn't manage to make it, and I miss live music!

19. Pick up the violin or piano again. On the point of music, I used to play four instruments and sing and I'd like to pick at least one up again, in an informal and social way. Plus it's always fun to have a party piece to play on the piano!

20. Carry on improving my skincare regime. I've made a great start with my current skincare saviours, but I'm excited to see my skin continue to improve.

21. Go back to Croatia. I fell in love with Croatia this year and I would love to return and explore the rest of the country, including Dubrovnik, Split and I'd love to go island hopping.

22. Go Geo-caching. Thanks to Corinne for this one!

23. Take every opportunity I'm given. This sums up a lot of the previous points really - I want to make the most of this year and go everywhere and do everything I possibly can! I'm excited to see what being 23 brings!

So there we have it, 23 things to focus on for the next year of my life! There seem like a lot, but the overall theme is happiness, travel and finding my place in the adult world; simple, right? There's only one way to find out!

Do you use your birthday as a time to reflect or look forwards?

Skincare Saviours

My skin has always been a problem for me and a part of my appearance which is definitely linked to my self-confidence. When my skin is looking good, which isn’t often in my eyes, I feel so much better, wear less make-up and generally feel happier. It feels slightly ridiculous to have my skin affect my mood so much but it makes a difference to the way people treat you, particularly those who have always had naturally good skin, and I’m always looking for new products to improve my acne, scarring and dark circles.

Luckily, I’m finally starting to find some products which really make a difference. I was over the moon to win a Magnitone Lucid at the Bloggers' Blog Awards in the raffle – if I could have chosen my prize, I would definitely have headed straight for this. I have only used this for two weeks and I am honestly blown away. Thanks to my crappy skin, I wasn’t expecting this to make much difference but I have been amazed. I’ve only used it two or three times a week, thanks to Hayley’s Magnitone review explaining how using it daily can damage the acid mantle in the skin, but there has still been a huge change. My bumpy, sore spots have disappeared and I’ve also noticed a difference in my scarring. The Magnitone effectively removes all my make-up and leaves my skin feeling super clean but not ‘scrubbed’ and sore. The device itself is basically a massive electric toothbrush for your face, and works in much the same way – using a moving brush to work deeper and more thoroughly. I was initially sceptical that it would make any difference, but the results speak for themselves and it’s a product I am excited to continue using.

I’ve also recently upped my skincare regime to include some more high-end products. I was kindly sent this Ole Henrikson Three Little Wonders mini gift set* by Escentual (£18.00) and they've become a must-have.  The trio takes you from morning ‘til evening, with three products which work together to help your skin. It’s aimed at fighting the signs of aging but you can never start too early  and I’ve found it’s really helped my skin generally too. The Truth Serum Collagen Booster is applied in the morning to clean skin and I love the citrus scent to wake me up in the mornings. Then, I apply the Sheer Transformation Moisturiser which sinks nicely into my skin, leaving my face feeling nourished and ready for make-up. Some cheaper moisturisers don’t react well with foundation I find, but Sheer Transformation actually helps my make-up stay in place for longer. At night, I remove my make-up and use Invigorating Night Treatment – a slightly gloopy, transparent cream which feels weird on my fingers but nice on my face! I then add some more Sheer Transformation to leave my skin feeling soft and ready for bed.

As an alternative moisturiser in the evenings, I love the Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream* (£43.50) for a luxurious yet light moisturiser. There is no scent, which I often find overpowering at bedtime, and you can tell that the product is great quality, plus a little goes a long way. Kiehl's have just released a new limited edition of this Ultra Facial Cream, slightly bizarrely in partnership with Tinie Tempah. The collaboration is to raise money for MTV Staying Alive, with £2 from each pot being donated to the HIV/AIDs charity. So not only does this leave my skin feeling nourished, but it’s for a good cause too.

Overall, I’m actually starting to become happy about the state of my skin and it is thanks to these products. I always feel self-conscious posting a review focused on my skin, as I think everyone is going to judge the quality of my skin, but these products have made a huge difference. I'm excited to see how my skin continues to improve - do you have any wonder products you would recommend? Have you tried any of the products in this post?

OOTD: Fur Baby

I've already blogged about the wonderful Bloggers' Blog Awards, but my worry - along with most of the attendees - was definitely what to wear. I had taken a huge risk and not even packed an outfit for the Awards when I left Cambridge, relying on a last-minute shopping trip in the Trinity Centre the night before the event, but luckily H&M came up trumps. After we had finished setting up, I grabbed Corrine from Skinned Cartree to take some snaps outside of Lamberts' Yard of my last-minute outfit:

hmfallinlove

hm-faux-fur

clarks-winter-boots

primark-rings-faux-fur

Dress: H&M. Faux fur gilet: H&M. Rings: Primark. Earrings: Platform 9 3/4, Kings Cross. Necklace: George at Asda* Boots: Clarks.

I've been loving the seventies trend all Summer, and I'm even more excited for it to stick around throughout Autumn and Winter because this means layers. Faux fur is always a favourite of mine during the colder months, so I was determined to find a faux fur gilet to wear over swing dresses and suede. After hunting through a few shops to no success, I finally stumbled upon this version in H&M and fell in love. It was nothing like I was originally looking for, but I love it. The greens, greys and blacks are fun and unusual but it also has a black cardigan back, which somehow make the gilet much more wearable - it adds just the right amount of fur rather than completely swamping me in fluffiness!

I decided to team the furry gilet with a simple dress, also from H&M. I love polo necks in winter, as they keep my cosy and look sleek and stylish. This dress is perfect for both days out and work, thanks to its high neckline and long sleeves. The simple skater style is so flattering and I felt both comfortable and confident in it. The plain grey is perfect for dressing up or down and I thought it matched perfectly with the fur, letting the fluff take centre stage. I've been loving H&M's #FallInLove campaign this Autumn on some bigger blogs; thanks to my single status, I thought I would hate seeing so many loved-up posts but they've been nicely balanced between bloggers loving their other halves and bloggers taking time to love themselves. I hate the motto to 'love yourself before you love others' - it's not something I think should be mutually exclusive. However, I've recently realised quite how happy I am single and I'm so busy it's great to spend my spare moments focusing on myself, my friends and my family rather than dating. I'm not the kind of person who wants to be in a relationship for the sake of it; perhaps somebody will come along and perhaps they won't. Sometimes it's nice to be selfish!

Anyway, back to clothes! Because the outfit was fairly simple. I added a pile of jewellery to add some interest. I've been loving the various sets of rings from Primark recently and this set of gold and purple toned rings are some of my favourites. I adore the mix of normal and midi rings which I can stack up or wear individually, plus they're a complete bargain (even if they turn my hands slightly green - oops!) Of course, I couldn't resist adding my Dobby earrings and my favourite George at Asda necklace to complete my accessories.

Finally, I added my brand new winter boots from Clarks. This year, I was determined to buy some sensible shoes, so of course I turned to Clarks. I'm really impressed with how fashionable these boots are and, unsurprisingly, they are so comfortable. They are perfect for walking around Leeds or London for hours on end and keeping my feet toasty and dry. Overall, I think the entire look is going to become a Winter staple for me - especially the faux fur! I might have already bought another faux fur jacket...

What do you think of my outfit? What do you wear to blogger meet ups?

A City Break in Southampton and London

As you many know, two weeks ago I finally completed my Masters’ degree and handed in my dissertation. It’s something I’ve been working on all Summer and I feel so relieved, but admittedly slightly lost, now this huge part of my life has been completed. I celebrated the end of this chapter in my life by heading to Southampton and London for a weekend and although I documented a lot of it on Instagram, I wanted to share some of my highlights in a more detailed post.

city-break-weekend-in-london

the-blues-kitchen-brunch

As soon as I had handed in my dissertation, I headed briefly to Southampton for dinner and drinks – I didn’t get much of a chance to explore but I loved the docks and would definitely recommend Banana Wharf if you are looking for somewhere for a special meal. For breakfast, I had a huge and delicious ice-cream from Sprinkles, then I travelled to London for the weekend. I loved having the time to play tourist and explore some places I’ve been wanting to visit for a long time. Cocktails at the Aqua Shard bar were definitely a highlight; I’ve been ticking off my panoramic skylines throughout the world and although I have headed to the top of tall buildings in to New York, Paris and Rome, I hadn’t yet got a chance to get a good view of London’s skyline. The Aqua Shard is free entry, as opposed to the £30.95 fee to get to the top of The Shard, although if you want to drink, a cocktail is a pricey £16, plus a service charge. However, the views were incredible, particularly at sunset and I loved admiring the skyline as I sipped on a luxurious cocktail.

The following day, I spent most of my time in Shoreditch, pretending to be hipster and trying out some places I’ve wanted to visit for a while. First on my list was The Blues Kitchen, an American blues restaurant known for its food and fun events. I chose the Pig ‘n’ Biscuits for brunch, which you can see above, and it was amazing; pulled pork, eggs, hollandaise and bacon bits on top of traditional Southern ‘biscuits,’ a scone-like base for the perfectly cooked eggs and delicious pulled pork. Then, I headed to a rather unique café; the London Cat Village. Now, I am most definitely a dog person and if a puppy café ever opens, I will be the first one there. However, I actually surprised myself by how much I enjoyed the cat café. For £4, I got to spend an hour playing with cats and I have honestly never felt more relaxed. There were a huge variety of cats and even adorable kittens, and every animal was alert, friendly and loving the attention. I’ve spent the last few weeks showing everyone I can the huge amount of photos I took on my phone and if you head to London for the day, I would definitely recommend it as a fun and relaxed thing to do.

I recently discovered the YPlan app, which is great for seeing what’s on in London that evening, the following day, or at the weekend. London is so huge that I can often find it so overwhelming I end up doing things I could do anywhere, like heading to a chain for lunch or shopping. Thanks to YPlan, I not only discovered the London Cat Village but I found out that the London Festival of Heat was on and I headed there for a taste of chilli and culture. Although it was frankly overpriced for a food market at £8, as it would have certainly been free up North, I still enjoyed myself and had fun challenging myself to try the hottest sauces on offer (in as small a quantity as possible of course). Now, whenever I head to London, I know to check YPlan to see what’s on and make the most of my time there.

I really enjoyed my weekend in London and having the time to explore the city. I packed so much more in than I was expecting and I can’t wait to carry on making the most of the capital whilst I work there part-time and get used to the commuter life. I love UK city breaks for a weekend of travel without the need to hop on a plane and I'm excited to share my recent weekend in Birmingham with you all too!

Where would you recommend to visit in London?

The Bloggers' Blog Awards

Last weekend, I headed to my favourite place in the country, Leeds, for a very special reason – the Bloggers’ Blog Awards. Hayley, from Tea Party Beauty, had the genius idea a few months ago to set up a blog awards, run by bloggers for bloggers. Sometimes, this industry can get a little competitive and negative and it was wonderful to attend a day which was full of positivity and love for each other and the words we write on the internet.

bloggers-blog-awards

bloggers-blog-awards

lamberts-yard-leeds

The event was held at Lambert’s Yard, a beautifully light and spacious venue in the centre of Leeds. I didn’t know Lambert’s Yard had a shop and I was really impressed with the clothes in the store, including Lazy Oaf and some kick-ass handbags by Joanna Pybus. The venue was also amazing and myself, Hayley, Corinne, Sharon and Sammie spent the morning preparing the space for the 60 attending bloggers – with the help of some prosecco and macarons of course!

Hayley had got some incredible brands involved to provide prizes for the winners and goodies for the raffle. Talented Talkers had provided their support for the event, alongside some excellent tote bags - mine is coming in very handy thanks to the new 5p carrier bag charge! Erica did an amazing job with the raffle and I was over the moon to win a Clarisonic - it's already dramatically changed my skin and I'm looking forward to reviewing it soon. My favourite discovery of the event was the gorgeous Jewellery Box jewels; the gold arrow ring in my goody box went straight onto my finger and has barely left since. There are simply so many brands and bloggers to mention, I know I won't be able to do it but I'll be sharing some of my goodies and thanking brands in future posts and on Twitter - I hope that's good enough! If you want to stalk the amazing brands involved, check out Hayley's posts on the day.

When it came to the awards, every blogger who won was so deserving and it was so uplifting to see the genuine disbelief and excitement on their faces. Yes, Jemma from Dorkface and Hayley, I am thinking about you two! It reminded me that hardly anyone seems to have belief in themselves in the blogging world, and although this creates some amazing down-to-earth and humble people, perhaps we all need to believe in ourselves a little more!

I've had a huge smile on my face this week thanks to my wonderful weekend in Leeds and it's incredible to see the long reaching effects of the event as the #BloggersBlogAwards hashtag is still full of such positivity and love. Hayley, you are a tour de force and I love you. Everyone else, see you next year for the Bloggers' Blog Awards 2!

Birthday Wishlist

It's my birthday next Wednesday and I am definitely not prepared to turn 23! I'm starting to feel scarily like an adult, despite the fact my student card is still valid (a fact I am desperately holding onto until it expires!) I wanted to put together a little wishlist of some items I've been lusting after, and what better time to do it than just before my birthday?

birthday-wishlist

1. A Bit of Fit
I love the idea of a FitBit as a great motivator to work out and just be more generally active. I’ve been struggling with my gym routine recently as I have thrown myself into working three part-time jobs and blogging as much as possible, leaving little time to workout. I love my fitness apps and the pedometer on the Nokia Lumia 735 was one of my favourite elements of the phone, as I mentioned in my Lumia review. Now I am back to using my regular phone, I miss this app and the FitBit is great for tracking general walking as well as gym sessions. Working so much, I’m also having to adjust to the lack of sleep so I think the sleep tracker would be another brilliant addition to my gadgets.

2. Give Me A Ring
As I just mentioned, I have become increasingly frustrated with my Huawei phone and hoping to invest in a new one. The camera simply isn’t good enough, particularly for Instagram, and I’ve got no more room to download any apps. Rather than irritating everyone with my constant moaning about it, I should probably just get a new one! An iPhone would be the dream, but I just can't justify the price as much as I try to!

3. Jean-ius
I’m trying to get the hang of my ‘adult’ wardrobe, especially now that I need a 'work' wardrobe, a 'blogger' wardrobe and a 'casual weekend' wardrobe (although this normally just means pyjamas!) These J Brand* jeans from Trilogy are expensive, but the kind of great quality which makes all the difference to a wardrobe. I love the skinny fit and the ankle roll ups are trendy and perfect for my short frame. A great pair of jeans looks great in all kinds of situations and it's something I think is a great investment piece.

4. All About The Eyes
I always feel frivolous asking for make-up as a gift so this is definitely something I would buy as a treat for myself, rather than expect somebody else to buy me. For me, make-up is a luxury not a basic so I feel guilty asking for something so unnecessary – although I suppose that’s what the treat of a birthday present is all about! I have been umm-ing and ahh-ing over the Charlotte Tilbury range for months now and I would love to invest in something for my make-up bag. I’m leaning towards the Dolce Vita palette thanks to its beautiful colours and glamourous packaging, although I’m tempted by a lipstick too.

6. You're A Wizard, Harry
Isn't it beautiful? I've been following the build up for the Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone for months now and I am so excited that it is finally published! Bloomsbury have done a fantastic job of the design and the illustrations I have seen so far by Jim Kay have been breathtaking. I've managed to resist buying a copy as my birthday is so close so fingers crossed somebody decides to treat me!

I seem to have chosen fairly expensive items for my birthday wishlist – I promise I’m not getting greedy! I think, as I get older, I’m starting to realise the value in items I need and want to invest in, as opposed to fast fashion or ‘filler’ gifts. I may not have learnt that one good quality item is better than 10 tshirts from Primark (I don’t think I’ll ever be able to quite shake that habit!) but I know the difference between what I need and what I want. This list is admittedly things that I want, and I could do without them all, but they are slightly more sensible and definitely items I would get a lot of use out of. How do your birthday wishlist tastes change each year?

Headrow House

Last week, I headed up to Leeds for the Bloggers' Blog Awards. However, Leeds is such a bustling city, there is always more than one blogger event going on whenever I visit, so I was excited to also attend the launch of Headrow House, Leeds' newest bar, club and event space. In fact it was so new, the building was still being built on the launch night so we headed past the builders into the finished beer hall inside.

Headrow House is very similar to Belgrave Music Hall - which makes sense, once you realise that they are owned by the same company. The guys behind Belgrave have taken everything that works about the venue and applied it to a new location on The Headrow. It comprises of four floors and two roof terraces, although unfortunately there aren't really any views to speak of. However, the space is great; we spent most of our time in the beer hall and the long benches and tables create a fun and social vibe. Once I had a Pilsner in my hand, I settled into the beer hall atmosphere and everyone seemed to be having a great time.

The student in me was shocked that a pint of beer was around the £5 mark - and this is Leeds! However, once I thought about it, I think this is intentional. Headrow House are effectively pricing out the students and ensuring the venue is going to appeal almost exclusively to locals. Headrow House wouldn't look out of place in London, and although I'm sure plenty of people will love this fact, it made me a little bit sad about the lack of some Leeds personality.

I never entirely understand the decision to host launch parties before a venue is completely finished, as I don't think I got to see the best version of Headrow House, as many parts of the building were still being finished. However, from what I did see, I would return again and I'm excited to see how the venue flourishes in the future months.

Check out Headrow's House website for all their future events. Will you head on down to Headrow House?

"Don't let the muggles get you down"

I love Harry Potter. I really, truly love it – it is a symbol of my childhood and has followed me into my twenties. I’m becoming well known for my Dobby earrings, I own almost every Harry Potter themed tshirt and pyjama set sold by Primark and my internship with Bloomsbury was partly so exciting because it was the publishing home of the Harry Potter series. The films have become as big a part of my love for Harry Potter as the books and the first time I visited the Warner Bros Studio Tour a couple of years ago, I actually cried as I stepped into the Great Hall - yes, I'm that fan. When I was offered some tickets for the September Screenings by the Studios, I might have screamed, cried and screamed some more with joy at the amazing opportunity to visit and review the special event:

I last visited the Warner Bros Studio Tour at Christmas in 2014 so I had been planning to visit the tour again for a while. For me, the tour continues to be excellent whether it is your first or fifth visit, thanks to the constant innovation and new sections introduced by the Leavesden studios. The latest addition to the tour was the part I was most excited to see; the Hogwarts Express. Just look at it. And I actually got to stand in front of it and even walk on it! It was such a highlight and a genius addition to the tour. I was also amazed to see some trolleys attached to wall, exactly the same as the ‘Platform 9 and 3/4’ trolley at King’s Cross Station. I have been waiting for months to spot a queue short enough to join for a photo at King’s Cross, which has obviously never happened, so I was more than happy to pose with the trolley at the Studios instead and pretend I could reach Hogwarts!

This visit was even more special as a result of the September Screenings. Unfortunately now finished, the tickets for the Screening not only included your entry to the tour, but also included some hot food, a soft drink and a cup of the famous Butterbeer to enjoy at the mid-point of the tour. After the tour, the ticket also included a screening of one of the Harry Potter movies in the tour cinema, accompanied by some popcorn or pick and mix. The day I attended was the screening of The Goblet of Fire, probably my favourite book of the series and I had honestly forgotten how good the film is too. After walking round the tour and getting excited about all the props and displays on show, I always want to go home and immediately watch the movies, so being able to sit down and watch one of the films in a room full of Harry Potter fans was perfect. Everyone was so involved in the film, nobody minded the odd popcorn rustle or whoop at an exciting moment; we were all there together as fans of Harry Potter to enjoy the evening and it was magical.

I’m hoping Warner Bros Studio Tour plan to repeat the September Screenings next year, if not sooner, as I would definitely return and do it again. It was a wonderful day and the Studios are constantly innovating and adding new events to their calendar – like the incredible option to dine at the Great Hall this Christmas, which was unfortunately completely out of my price range and is now sold out. I personally don’t mind these higher priced events, as long as there is still a balance of alternative events and seasonal offerings for a range of fans, whatever their budget. For me, the September Screenings were the right price for an amazing experience and I loved every single second. I cannot wait to head back as soon as I can!

Have you ever visited the Warner Bros Studio Tour? What was your favourite part?
